Photoshop Crash Course (3-Hour Plan)

Hour 1: The Foundation & Navigation

The goal here is to stop being intimidated by the interface.

  • The Workspace (20 mins): Understanding the Canvas, Tool Toolbar (left), and the Layers Panel (bottom right).

  • The Golden Rule of Layers (20 mins): Learning why we never work on the "Background" layer. Practice creating, naming, and grouping layers.

  • Essential Navigation (20 mins): * V: Move Tool

    • Z: Zoom

    • Spacebar (hold): Hand tool to pan around.

    • Ctrl/Cmd + Z: The life-saving "Undo" button.

Hour 2: Understanding the tools

The Selection & Framing Group

1. Marquee Tool (M)

  • What it does: Creates perfect geometric selections (Rectangles or Ellipses).

  • Pro Tip: Hold Shift while dragging to create a perfect square or a perfect circle. Hold Alt/Option to draw the shape from the center outward.

  • Use case: Selecting a specific box for a button or framing a circular profile picture.

2. Lasso Tool (L)

  • What it does: Allows for freehand, "organic" selections.

  • The Family: * Lasso: Total freehand.

    • Polygonal Lasso: Click point-to-point for straight-edged objects (like a building).

    • Magnetic Lasso: Snaps to the edges of an object automatically as you move your mouse.

  • Use case: Quickly grabbing a rough shape that isn't a perfect circle or square.

3. Selection Tool (Object/Quick Selection) (W)

  • What it does: Uses AI to find the "subject" of your photo.

  • How to use: With the Object Selection Tool, just draw a rough box around what you want to cut out, and Photoshop will shrink-wrap the selection to the object.

  • Use case: The fastest way to remove a person or product from a background.

4. Crop Tool (C)

  • What it does: Changes the dimensions of your entire canvas.

  • Pro Tip: Look at the top bar for "Content-Aware Fill." If you expand your crop outside the image, Photoshop will use AI to "imagine" and draw more of the background to fill the gap.

  • Use case: Changing a horizontal photo into a vertical one for social media.

Hour 3: Composition, Color, and Exporting

Putting the pieces together into a professional look.

  • Adjustment Layers (20 mins): Adding "filters" like Brightness/Contrast, Hue/Saturation, and Color Balance that sit on top of your layers.

  • Text & Typography (20 mins): Using the Type Tool (T). Adjusting leading (space between lines) and kerning (space between letters) to make text readable.

  • The Final Polish & Export (20 mins): * Organizing the file.

    • File > Export > Export As... (Saving as a high-quality PNG or JPG).
